Thirty inches looks manageable on a ruler. In a landing sock, that same koi feels like a wet, muscular 21-pound animal that can outlive the pump beside its pond. Length is the visible layer. The revealing comparison is mass. Johnson’s estimated 30-inch koi weighs almost six times FishBase’s maximum published goldfish weight. That does not prove koi produce six times the waste at every meal; it shows why counting “four fish” says little about filter demand.
