How Many Calories in a Blue Moon, and Which Part of the Beer Supplies Them

The figures above trace back to the nutrition data Molson Coors supplies to the databases that carry it, and the databases do not all round it the same way.
FatSecret, MyNetDiary and Carb Manager each list 12 fl oz of Blue Moon Belgian White at 168 calories, 14.1 g carbohydrate, 1.9 g protein, 0 g fat. BeerBoard, the tap-menu data service many American bars license for their draft lists, publishes 170 calories with the same 14.1 g carbohydrate, plus 0 g sugar, 15 mg sodium, 5.4% ABV and 10 IBU. CalorieKing gives 170. Eat This Much gives 171.
Four totals for one liquid, spanning three calories. The cause is documented rather than mysterious: the United States does not require a nutrition panel on beer. TTB Ruling 2013-2, issued 28 May 2013, permits a voluntary "Serving Facts" statement showing serving size, servings per container, calories and grams of carbohydrate, protein and fat. Voluntary means the brewer chooses the format, and each database then rounds a supplied figure to its own house convention.
I was hired in 2011 to read Turkish shipping paperwork for a spice importer here in Rotterdam and ended up on the grading bench instead, which means I have spent fifteen years treating a declared number as a claim with a tolerance around it. A certificate of analysis I once accepted was correct in every field it filled in. The lot it described was still about a third safflower by weight. That jar has sat unopened on my shelf ever since, and the habit it left me with is to ask which part of a declared figure was measured and which part is arithmetic.
Beer calories are unusually easy to interrogate on exactly that question, because you can rebuild the number from the alcohol content.
Which part of the total dominates
Alcohol, by a wide margin. Here is the arithmetic, which anyone can repeat with a calculator.
Twelve US fluid ounces is 354.9 mL. At 5.4% ABV that is 19.2 mL of ethanol. Ethanol's density is 0.789 g/mL, so the serving holds 15.1 grams of alcohol. For reference, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines a US standard drink as 14 grams of pure alcohol, which makes one Blue Moon about 1.08 standard drinks.
The energy value of that alcohol comes from the Atwater general factors, set out in the FAO's chapter on calculating the energy content of foods and traced there to Atwater and Benedict in 1902: 7.0 kcal per gram rounded, 6.9 unrounded. Carbohydrate and protein both carry 4 kcal per gram in the same system.

Those three lines sum to 168, which is the check that matters. When a reconstruction lands within a calorie of the published total, the published total was built the same way, from a measured ABV and a measured carbohydrate figure rather than from an estimate.
The practical consequence for anyone tracking intake: the wheat, the oats, the Valencia orange peel and the coriander are not where the number lives. Any beer at 5.4% ABV in a 12 ounce glass arrives carrying roughly 104 calories before a single gram of malt is counted. You can change the malt bill. You cannot drink around the ethanol.
Blue Moon and Blue Moon Light: what the 73-calorie gap is made of
Blue Moon Light is the beer that spent four years on shelves as LightSky. Molson Coors revealed the change at its distributor convention in Orlando in late September 2023 and rolled the new packaging out in February 2024. On the company's own Beer & Beyond blog, brand marketing director Mara Schaefer explained the reasoning plainly: the liquid was not changing, and the new name simply tied the light citrus wheat ale to the rest of the portfolio. It sells in a light blue 12 ounce slim can at 95 calories, 3.6 g carbohydrate, 1.1 g protein, 4.0% ABV and 10 IBU.

Run the same reconstruction on the Light and something worth knowing falls out. At 4.0% ABV a 12 ounce serving holds 14.2 mL of ethanol, or 11.2 grams, which is 77 calories. The 3.6 g of carbohydrate adds 14. The 1.1 g of protein adds 4. Total 95, matching the label again.
So the 73 calories separating the two beers break down like this: about 42 came off the carbohydrate side, about 27 off the alcohol, and about 3 off the protein. Alcohol dominates the total in both beers, and by a wider share in the Light, where 77 of 95 calories are ethanol, or 81%. Carbohydrate dominates the difference between them. Molson Coors got most of the savings by stripping fermentables and drying the beer out, and took a comparatively modest cut in strength on top.
That distinction changes what a substitution buys you. Switching from Belgian White to Light removes 73 calories and 10.5 grams of carbohydrate, and it removes only about a quarter of the alcohol.
How many calories are in a 16 ounce Blue Moon
Around 224. Scaling is straightforward here because it is the identical liquid in a larger container: 168 divided by 12 gives 14.0 calories per fluid ounce, and 16 × 14.0 = 224. A 16 ounce serving also carries about 18.8 g of carbohydrate and 2.5 g of protein. The 19.2 ounce stovepipe can that has become common in single-serve coolers works out to roughly 269 calories.
One caution about restaurant data. A widely mirrored chain-menu entry for a 16 ounce Blue Moon pour lists 200 calories with 18 g carbohydrate and 14 g of sugars. The sugar figure contradicts every brewer-derived source, which put Blue Moon Belgian White at 0 g, and 200 calories cannot be reconciled with 18 g of carbohydrate in a 5.4% beer by any arithmetic. Read it as a data-entry error in a menu system rather than a different formulation. When components stop reconciling with the total, the total is usually not the part that is wrong.
How to estimate the calories in a draft pour
Everything above describes a sealed container with a known fill. Draft is a different exercise, because the number you need is how much liquid actually reached the glass.
The standard American vessel is the 16 fl oz shaker pint, and it holds 16 ounces only when filled to the absolute lip. Trade coverage of the long-running "honest pint" argument, including reporting by The Source Weekly and Indiana on Tap, puts a normal pour with an inch of head at roughly 14 to 15 ounces of beer. Then there is the so-called cheater pint, a glass built to shaker height with an unusually thick base, which reaches its brim at 14 ounces and delivers around 12.5 once the foam is on. At the other end, a 20 ounce imperial nonic gives you a genuine pint with headroom to spare.
Three steps, and the arithmetic is quick enough to do at the bar:
- Identify the glass and its brim volume. Shaker pint 16 fl oz, cheater pint 14 fl oz, imperial nonic 20 fl oz. A glass with an etched fill line near the rim is telling you it pours an honest 16.
- Subtract the foam. Roughly one fluid ounce per finger of head. A two-finger pour in a shaker leaves about 14.5 ounces of liquid.
- Multiply by the beer's calories per fluid ounce. 14.0 for Belgian White, 7.9 for Blue Moon Light, 6.7 for the non-alcoholic.
A two-finger pour of Belgian White in a proper shaker therefore lands near 203 calories. The same beer in a cheater pint is closer to 175, and a full 20 ounce nonic is 280.
Why 0 grams of sugar does not make it a low-calorie beer
BeerBoard's panel puts Blue Moon Belgian White at 0 g of sugar, which surprises people who taste orange in it and assume sweetness has to come from somewhere with weight.
It comes from fermentation working properly. Brewer's yeast consumes the fermentable sugars from the malted barley, wheat and oats and converts them into ethanol and carbon dioxide. What survives into the finished beer, the 14.1 grams recorded as carbohydrate, is mostly dextrin, a longer-chain carbohydrate that ale yeast cannot ferment. Dextrin contributes mouthfeel and body without registering as sweet. The Valencia orange peel and coriander are flavoring additions measured in fractions of a gram per serving, far too little to move a nutrition line.
The question I get asked most often at work is whether cheap turmeric has been dyed, and my answer is always the price rather than the color, because the color is the thing an adulterant is chosen to imitate. The same logic applies to a beer panel. A 0 g sugar line is not the absence of sugar from the recipe. It is the record of sugar having been converted into the component that supplies 62% of the calories.
How much to trust these figures
Enough to plan a week around, with a stated band.
The rules are actively changing. On 17 January 2025 the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau published Notice No. 237 at 90 FR 6654, proposing to make an "Alcohol Facts" statement mandatory on wines above 7% ABV, distilled spirits and malt beverages. The proposed panel would carry serving size, servings per container, ABV, fluid ounces of pure ethyl alcohol per serving, calories, and grams of carbohydrate, fat and protein, with sugars optional. Calories above 50 per serving would round to the nearest 10, and the whole statement would carry a tolerance of plus or minus 20%. The comment period was extended by 120 days and closed on 15 August 2025, with the Brewers Association filing on the final day; as far as I can establish, no final rule has issued, and TTB has proposed a five-year compliance window once one does.
Apply that proposed ±20% band to 168 calories and you get a legal range of 134 to 202. That is the honest width of the claim as things stand, and it is wider than the entire difference between a 12 ounce Belgian White and a 12 ounce Blue Moon Light.
The alcohol component is the part I would trust furthest, because ABV is policed separately and tightly under existing labeling law, which is what makes it usable as a check on everything else. A 5.4% declaration is a regulated statement. The ~104 calories it implies is therefore the firmest number in the panel, and it happens to be the largest one.
Which points at where the real variance sits for a person counting. The formulation choice between Belgian White and Light moves 73 calories. Moving from a 12 ounce can to a full 20 ounce nonic of the same beer moves 112. Nothing in the Blue Moon range spans as much as the glass does.
